Sententia super libro sex principiorum
- This is a literal commentary on the Liber sex principiorum generally ascribed to Gilbert of Poitiers, which was probably read extraordinarie by Gentile (Marmo 2004: 23; Marmo and Stettler 2025: 16-23).
- The terminus post quem for the redaction of the commentary on the Liber sex principiorum can likely be set at 1298 (Marmo and Stettler 2025: 23–28). The commentary on the Liber sex principiorum was certainly composed after those on the Isagoge and the Categories, to which Gentile refers at several points in the former (Marmo and Stettler 2025: 25-26). If the commentary on the Liber sex principiorum was composed before the commentary on the Perihermenias, which has been dated between 1295 and 1304, with a preference for a date around 1300 (Saccenti forthcoming), then 1304 could be proposed as a terminus ante quem (Stettler forthcoming).
- The commentary consists of 16 lectiones of varying length, organized by topic in alignment with the chapters of the Liber sex principiorum: it opens with three preliminary lectures on “form”, it then explores the six categories — actio (lectiones 4 e 5), passio (6), quando (7-9), ubi (10-11), positio (12-13.1-4), habitus (13.5-15, 14.1-6) — and concludes with a treatment of magis et minus (14.7-13, 15) and one of generatio (16) based on Aristotle’s De generatione et corruptione (Marmo and Stettler 2025: 14-16).

Physicorum> quod etiam sit motus in substantiam, ipse ibi non loquitur proprie de motu, sed largo modo secundum quod se extendit ad generationem et corruptionem, ita quod in substantia non est generatio simpliciter, quia ad eam sit motus proprie, sed quia ipsa est terminus motus, scilicet generationis, loquendo largo modo de motu. Et hoc est.
